I just returned to L.A> and thought I would get writing again: Volvo is building a plug-in front wheel drive diesel engine with rear-drive electric motor that will have an 11.3 KWH battery pack. Although the demonstration model, the Volvo V-70, has very expensive batteries ($10,000 lithium ion battery pack), Volvo expects to be able to bring the cost down. Toyota, the out-front leader with its successful non-plug-in hybrid, Prius, has been evaluating all the various plug-in systems, and as of now, plans to begin mass production of its plug-in hybrid in 2012. It has been said that this model will go for up to 18 miles on only battery power, and the price will be in the upper $40,000 range.
